08Sep The Seal of Confession

I am relieved to see in today’s paper that the Minister for Justice has put an end to this unreal frenzy about the Seal of Confession, by taking it totally off the agenda. It was always a red herring. And now we can relax that we priests won’t have to spend the last years of our lives in prison; but it is probably also my last chance of martyrdom gone!
For a while there, with threats to jail us if we didn’t reveal everyone’s sins, and the Minister for Education calling on parents to wrest the authority over the schools away from the clergy, I was beginning to feel paranoid.

Just because you’re not paranoid doesn’t mean they are not out to get you!

Hang in there, Father. You have the support of everyone with an ounce of ethical sensitivity. It is hard to believe a politician would believe a priest can ever break the seal, regardless of the circumstances.
