17Nov Presider’s Page for Sun. 17 November (33rd Sunday)

Opening Comment (for the Presider)

The readings this Sunday focus on the end of the world, though we are also reassured that people of faith have nothing to fear. Penitential Rite: We renew our trust in God’s promises, as we call to mind our sins (pause): Lord Jesus, you came to gather the nations into the peace of God’s kingdom … You come in word and sacrament to strengthen us in holiness … You will come in glory with salvation for your people: Lord, have mercy.

Introduction to the Scripture Readings (for Ministers of the Word)

Malachi 3: 19-20 Those who uphold God’s name need have nothing to fear when the world ends.

2 Thessalonians 3: 7-12 A condemnation of laziness.

Luke 21: 5-19 St Luke writes about the end of the world and the second coming of Christ, with words of reassurance for disciples of the Lord.

Introduction (by the Presider) My friends, let us make our prayers known to God who rules the earth.

  1. For people who suffer as the result of natural disasters, especially the people of the Philippines, that they may experience practical support (pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear us.
  2. For those who live in war-torn lands, especially those in Syria, that refugees may be welcomed and the wounded healed (pause). Lord, hear us.
  3. For people who live in fear of the end of the world, that faith in the loving God may reassure them (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  4. For peace in our country, particularly industrial peace, that the rights of employees may always be respected (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  5. For people whose lives have been shattered by drugs, that they and their families may find the help they need (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  6. For those who have died, and especially for all road traffic accident victims, that all we have loved may be raised to life on the last day (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.

Conclusion (by the Presider) Lord our God, you rule the world with justice: help us in all our needs, we pray, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
