To a huge collective sigh of relief from most of the Parish Secretaries and priests throughout Ireland The National Library of Ireland has made historical parish records of baptisms and marriages available on line at

This website contains images from the NLI’s collection of Catholic parish register microfilms. The registers contain records of baptisms and marriages from the majority of Catholic parishes in Ireland and Northern Ireland up to 1880.

Now might be an appropriate moment for all political parties in both Houses of the Oireachtas and Stormont (and even the US Senate and Congress) to unite in a sincere vote of thanks to all the living and deceased parish priests, curates and parish secretaries on the island of Ireland who have done the State and States some uncomplaining civil service over the past centuries, and who have curated their registered records much more carefully than the State and its predecessor managed to do between 1821 and 1922.
Pace your final line above, though, a few of us might prefer to see that described as “from the majority of Catholic parishes in/on (the Island of) Ireland up to 1880”.

Some of these books are in dreadful condition and there are some unacceptable comments written in on some of the entries (bastard, illegitimate, in caps & underlined).

Just a small qualification to your sensible word of praise for the registrars above.
