26Nov Fr Pat O’Brien RIP

Tuam Archdiocese

There is a deep sense of sadness and loss throughout the diocese today at the news of the death of priest and poet Fr. Pat O’Brien following an illness. Fr Pat was a native of Claremorris and served in many places throughout the diocese including Clare Island, Kilmeena, Skehana, GMIT Castlebar, Tuam and Caherlistrane where he was Parish Priest up until his death.

Pat brought so many unique, rare and valued qualities to his priesthood, not least of those was a deep understanding and love of the human condition no matter how broken. Deeply spiritual, Pat will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives he touched and the way in which he brought Christ to them.

Sincere sympathy to those whose hearts are broken for his loss today, especially his family. Solas na bhFlaitheas.

Reposing in Caherlistrane Church, Saturday 3.00-6.00pm. Funeral Mass on Sunday at 2.00pm followed by burial in Claremorris Cemetery.

“Blue is the Colour, Jarlath’s is our name”

Friends,
As the evening shadows fell yesterday afternoon, Fr. Pat O’Brien, comrade, captain and commander-in-chief (from our well spent or misspent youth on those blue St. Jarlath’s fields) was called ashore.

Pat served his parishioners and communities well with his heartfelt words, his selfless deeds and courageous actions that captured the hearts and minds of friend and foe alike.

Later this evening (Friday) at 8pm, and led by Fr. Pat Donnellan, we are holding a Prayer Vigil in his memory.

We plan to light a candle for Pat during the service – a symbolic gesture of appreciation from our hearts to his – as we begin to say our farewells to a man much loved, admired and respected by those us whose paths he crossed many times since 1964 or there abouts.

    Fr Pat O’Brien RIP

Loss upon loss, and this is one of the greatest for his friends and his church. If the Irish Catholic Church was spelt “Pat O’Brien” what a blessed church it would be. But that is how it is spelt, when spelt properly. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
